3-D Printing Breathes New Life into Local Children’s Bookstore

Young Bookworms Bookstore Combines the Magic of Stories with the Creativity of 3-D Printing to Beat the Odds

Colorado Springs, Colorado — August 15, 2025 — When Young Bookworms Bookstore opened its doors three and a half years ago, it was on a mission to inspire young readers. But like many independent bookstores, it struggled against a challenging economy and the convenience of online shopping. By June 2025, the beloved children’s bookstore was preparing to close its doors.

Then came an unexpected twist — and a second chapter.

In July 2024, Young Bookworms introduced 3-D printed products as an experiment to see if it could attract new customers. The response was instant. Families, teens, tweens, and even young children fell in love with the colorful, creations. Customers who came for 3-D printed items often left with books in hand — rekindling a love for reading while discovering a new creative outlet.

By October, owner Joni McCoy, an author herself, invested in 3D printers and self taught the craft from the ground up. The store now houses (10) 3-D printers running 24 hours a day to meet demand, filling the shop with the comforting hum of machines bringing imagination to life.

Along with the largest selection of 3D printed creations in the area, the store’s offerings quickly expanded. In January 2025, Young Bookworms began selling 3-D printing filament, becoming the Colorado Springs and surrounding areas go-to resource for hobbyists with over 600 filament reels to choose from. In February, the store launched a weekly 3-D Hobby Group for kids, where young 3D printers share their creations with other members, troubleshoot failed prints, and even sell their own product in the store — keeping 100% of the profits while learning real-world business skills like pricing, packaging, and marketing. Beginning this month, we are offering 3D custom printing services.

Special exhibits have also become a highlight. This month, visitors can explore a 3-D printed Jurassic Park exhibit, complete with intricate, hand-painted dinosaur models. In December, a Harry Potter-themed exhibit will bring even more magic to the community.

For Joni, the transformation is more than financial — it’s personal.

“As an author, nothing makes me happier than seeing a child leave with a book tucked under one arm while playing with their 3D printed treasure,” she says. “We’re not just surviving anymore — we’re thriving, and we’re here to stay.”

With its lease extended and its community behind it, Young Bookworms Bookstore & YBCO 3D Printing & Filament proves that with creativity and passion, even a small bookstore can write itself a whole new story.
